What is BeatBattle?

BeatBattle is Renoise's official music competition. Despite its name, the competition focuses on themes rather than on beats. We make the submitted songs available to our visitors, so they can listen and learn from them.

Grand Finale!

The results are in! Seems like it was a tough battle once again, with many close calls.

BeatBattle 5 Ranking

Entries now available!

All songs submitted for the compo are now available. You can download them all in a 160 MB zip or as separate files. Please take some time to listen to all of them, then cast your votes.

BeatBattle 5 Entries

Recording and VST allowed

One of Renoise 1.8's biggest new features is the sample recorder. Renoise songs with vocals and live instruments are few and far between, which is a bit disappointing. That is why we allow you to create and use your own samples, either by recording them or by rendering VSTs.

Theme

The theme is: Underwater.

Need inspiration? Check the FAQ about the theme.

Rules

Here is a summary of the rules.

  1. BeatBattle 5 is open to all registered and demo users of Renoise
  2. One entry per author; a co-op is considered a separate author
  3. Only legal samples: create your own samples, use the sample pack or find free samples
  4. Make a song that fits the underwater theme. Also check the other criteria.
  5. Format: XRNS or RNS. Maximum filesize: 5 mb. Tutorial: how to shrink your song
  6. E-mail your song before June 2nd, 0:00 CET to: beatbattle at gmail dot com. Subject: [bb5]Artist - Title

Should you participate, read the complete set of rules.

There have been a couple of questions regarding the rules. Check the Frequently Asked Questions.

Samplepack

Download the official samplepack.

The samplepack has been created by yOUTH, who won BeatBattle 3 with the song EarWax.

"Be original, you don't have to use a bass sound as a bass or a lead as a lead sound. Use your creativity."

Prizes

We collected over 1500 euro of prizes, to be divided over the best entries. Complete list: all BB5 prizes

Tips

  • Don't take the theme too literal. Some people seem to go a long way to include samples of water. You can also take a more cerebral approach. A painter's palette rarely contains the subject he is painting.
  • You can open the xrns and convert the samples to OGG VORBIS. Compressing samples may decrease the filesize of your entry by 90%.
  • Because your song will be publicly available, we have to be strict about it that all samples are legal. Other than that, there are few restrictions. Check out The Freesound Project.
  • There are few restrictions in this competition, which can have a paradoxical effect. The sheer amount of possibilities can actually slow you down. You can decide to use only the samplepack.
