Frequently Asked Questions - Renoise Usage

Because the MP3 license is too expensive, Renoise is not capable of exporting songs directly to MP3.

The full version of Renoise can render songs to WAV files of up to 32-bit 96 kHz. Use an external MP3 encoder to convert the rendered WAV files, eg. RazorLame.

  1. Download Renoise for MacOS.
  2. If not done automatically, extract the archive.
  3. Move Renoise or Renoise_Reg to the application folder. Rename if you like.
  4. Optionally, drop the Renoise icon from the application folder into the dock.
  5. When starting Renoise for the first time, you will be prompted to install the ReWire Eengine. Enter the Mac's Administrator's password.
  6. To enable AU plugins, open the Preferences panel in Renoise and enable the AU Plugins checkbox. AU plugin files are installed under /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components/. In Renoise they will pop up in either the Track DSPs or the Instrument Settings tab. Same goes for VSTs, but note that VSTs for Windows can not be used on MacOS.

In most cases it's a matter of downloading and extracting a Renoise package. You can run Renoise directly from the resulting folder.

Make sure the bug you have found has not already been reported in the bug forum. If it appears to be a new bug, post a report. Please include:

  1. OS and DirectX version
  2. System specs: RAM, CPU, soundcard
  3. config.xml, crashlog.txt and log.txt/renoise.log from the following location:

    Windows: %appdata%\Renoise\V2.6.1\

    MacOS: ~/Library/Logs/, ~/Library/Preferences/Renoise/V2.6.1/

    Linux: ~/.renoise/V2.6.1/

(replace V2.6.1 with the version you have installed)

Try to find a recipe to reproduce the bug. Once reproducable, it will be easier for us to find a fix. Be as specific as you can. We appreciate it if you can show us the buggy behavior by providing examples, such as a screenshot or part of a song.

In trackers, lots of stuff is vertical. By just holding down a key you can quickly fill a column with the same character. For example, to lay down a beat very quickly. You can adjust Edit Step to change the amount of rows the cursor will move. Set it to 0 to stop the cursor from moving down.

When you type a 0 in the Effect Column the cursor moves down, but the 0 isn't there. That's because the leading 0 is optional. You can change this behavior: Preferences > GUI > Hide 0's in effect columns.

When you enter a note in the pattern, that note will continue to play until it stops by itself, for example when the end of the sample is reached. When you want to stop a note, you need to insert a Note-Off event. A note may also stop when it runs into another note. In case of a sample-based instrument, the New Note Action comes into play.
