Face masks are also pop filters!

November 1, 2020 - 17:51

A cool trick for those of us who record vocals, the now-ubiquitous face mask can also function as a pop filter.

I’ve never owned a “real” pop filter, so I don’t know how it compares to those, but it seems like the mask does a great job versus no mask at all.

The idea hit me when I was testing one of my masks with a lighter. If you can’t blow a flame out with your mask on, then you also won’t be sending a bunch of pops and air into a microphone either.

Disable autofocus?

November 1, 2020 - 14:17

Every time I click on he edit screen. Renoise auto-focuses on the place I clicked the cursor.

I can’t find the option to disable this. Where it be?

I just wanna click and not have everything jump around like it’s in a House of Pain song.

Looking for a good browser for macos

October 31, 2020 - 07:18

Completely off-topic, but you guys are tech nerds like me.

I am looking for a replacement browser for safari under macos, since Apple managed to make safari unusable (adblockers are not working anymore, addons are not allowed to manipulate the incoming html anymore, addons run as extra app and are limited, the addons offers are shady).

So far I tried:

  • Firefox - often pretty laggy when it comes to huge data, and the dev tools are limited, too
  • Chrome - only if you want to offer your full life data to Google, or your life is interlocked with Google services
  • Chromium - lacks of important video codecs
  • IE mac - is a joke and same story as Google, but with Microsoft
  • Opera - page buildup is fast, but videos do not seem to be gpu accelerated (uses opus codec, not h265)

So I guess that I am looking for a browser based on the recent Webkit engine, but not Apple and also having all codecs ready, and providing proper dev tools… Any good idea for me?

120 BPM Track, trying to branch out

October 31, 2020 - 05:57

Hello Renoise community.

Gonna just post my stuff here, because I don’t want to be the guy that just spams their stuff everywhere.

This one I try a tempo of 120 BPM, and really just try to make a song that’s not boring. I’ve been trying to really internalize some music theory and learn how to use chords and melodies and things like that. So I tried to incorporate more of that into this song.

As always if you have any feedback, whether it be about composition, mixing, a specific part in the track, please feel welcome to share. I had a real rough time trying to handle the mid-range of the track and it has definitely shown me that I definitely have a long way to go in terms of mixing.

I also think this song overstays its welcome a little bit so if you have any input on that feel free to share.

But mixing isn’t what people come to music for right? I’m rambling now so I’m just gonna shut up.

As always thank you for taking the time to listen and I hope you enjoy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2kBpIFiGUI here’s the YouTube video so you can see the track visually. It is out of sync unfortunately, due to a plugin on the master.

Is there any way to bind shortcut key for specific MIDI notes?

October 30, 2020 - 20:19

Many VSTs assume you have an 88 keys MIDI keyboard and bind some effects and modifiers to the notes that are at the right or left edge of the MIDI keyboard. My keyboard is only 61 keys so I can’t effectively press these keys while playing some notes. Is there any way around this (maybe even without Renoise)? I want for keys on my numpad to send specific MIDI notes.

Hi All,
I bought Renoise a while back, but haven’t used it in years (I just couldn’t really get comfortable with trackers). It’s up for sale at £40 if anyone wants it? I assume the license transfer will be handled by Renoise staff?
Cheers

New sample generator online: WAFXR

October 27, 2020 - 13:37

Wanted to share a new SFX Generator - online - that really pushes the boundaries of what types of sounds can be generated for your game design - WAFXR by @fenomas (on Twitter): https://andyhall.github.io/wafxr/

It’s got quite a few different sorts of modulation and oscillators that the AS3FXR / JSFXR / BFXR just don’t have, including FM, Additive, PW, and… METALLIC NOISE! Yep, you can make hi-hats, cymbals, clanks, clinks. Bass drums, percussion, etc. The very first thought I had was to notify those who like to make their own samples, be it waveforms or percussive elements. It’s got wavefolding and bitcrushing, and a variety of filters. Very comprehensive! Outputs to .WAV for further editing.

The thing(s) that really caught my ear are the Metallic Noise, the additive (harmonic) synthesis, and the FM modulation. For those of you who do sound design for video games (like me), or who design your own sounds for Renoise, there’s a lot to unwrap here. All sorts of great material.

MIDI clock > all ports

October 27, 2020 - 07:26

Hi,

I am running Renoise with quite a few bits of external gear, and i am currently using a hardware MIDI merger to send the clock output from ‘output A’ -> MIDI merger -> synths. Yet, i have run out of ports on the merger (a lot of my synths lack an out/thru port), so i am wondering (again): couldn’t Renoise just send it’s clock the all MIDI outputs? I am using a 4x4 MIDI interface, and life would be so much easier if Renoise could send it’s clock to all outputs.I could even leave out the MIDI merger

I am reluctant to use external tools to ‘map’ these outputs virtually. I tried that once, but that was an unstable solution.

I can’t think of a reason why this shouldn’t be implemented, but maybe someone can enlighten me here.

Many thanks!!

Dennis

FM synth inside renoise

October 27, 2020 - 00:42

Does anyone know of a way to do fm synthesis inside of renoise without any vst. I been trying to figure it out myself but most of the information my found is several years old so maybe a new method has been found. Basically what I am trying to achieve is a simple dx7 style synth, and its just more convenient without vst. So if anyone knows let me know thanks anyway
also don’t know where to categorize this as it’s a possibility.

Help using Renoise with Ableton Push 2 (windows)

October 26, 2020 - 20:41

Hi, i would like to use the Ableton Push 2 as an input device on Renoise, I already have it working but with no LED or Screen support. The issue with this is, I want to use the Scale feature on the Push 2 to display notes that are in the scale I select on the push 2. If I try to to use Ableton and Renoise at the same time, it says there are errors and the Push 2 is only working inside Ableton while not sending anything to Renoise other than transport controls.
