Phrases for beat loops

October 16, 2020 - 11:11

Hi, new user here.

I am just scratching the surface of what is possible with Renoise, and I was wondering what best practices there are for phrases. I was playing with the idea to use phrases for beat loops, so you could easy switch them and add filltro’s and stuff without having to copy paste the patterns all the time.

Is this a good idea or is it “meh”? A friend of my does everything in patterns to give his songs a more organic feeling, but i’m new to Renoise and don’t know the best practices for phrases.

So long story short: where do you use phrases for? And is it a good idea to use them for beats?

How to chop stems for a remix for Renoise (using Ableton)

October 16, 2020 - 10:07

Hello
If you’re doing a remix in Renoise you’re not going to want LONG audio stems. I use Ableton to chop the Loops up so I can easily use them in Renoise!

You can do a similar technique using renoise but you end up doing it blind to a certain degree.

Ableton can be your friend!

[Bug] Linux 3.2+ doesn't load VSTs

October 16, 2020 - 03:12

I tested Renoise 3.1.1, 3.2 and 3.2.2 with Surge and Zyn-Fusion (zynaddsubfx-vst) from the KXStudio repo on Linux Mint 20.

The 3.2 series is scanning and finding the plugins, but the dropdown doesn’t even activate. When I click the arrow it flashes orange, nothing else happens, so I can’t load them. I tested 3.1.1, as it’s the most recent version in the 3.1 release series, and everything worked as expected. 3.1.1 scanned, found, loaded, and worked with these Linux VST plugins.

Volume columns don't work properly in older xrns projects

October 16, 2020 - 00:27

After loading an older xrns project (some made on a Windows pc, some made on a Macbook, in both cases made with older versions of Renoise) into my Macbook Pro running Renoise 3.2.1 and listening to it, the commands in the volume columns sometimes just don’t work. When a note (starting a sample) is set with “00” in the volume column and later in the pattern set to “80” (what should be full volume), knowing that the sample is long enough to still be running when set to “80”, there’s just no sound. I know for sure there should be sound. I have this problem with ALL my older work. Is this a bug or am I missing something? By the way, I am running a demo version of Renoise.

Baby Audio Plugins

October 14, 2020 - 13:01

I had the two free VST2 plugins by Baby Audio, namely Magic Switch and Baby Comeback, working fine and all. I formated my computer, reinstalled clean Renoise and though all other plugins are detected and working fine the 2 plugins mentioned above are totally invisible. All folder settings are double checked. Other plugins show up fine. I have set my folder C:Plugins instead of inside the Program Files path (C:Program Files\Plugins). Anybody have any suggestions? Thank You!

Recording MIDI notes to pattern editor from VST arpeggiator

October 13, 2020 - 00:55

Hello,

There’s a great VST plugin called BlueARP which allows designing note sequences that can be played by other VST instruments when BlueARP is set to route its MIDI data for the other VST instruments. With a regular MIDI keyboard, it is possible to record note data directly inside Renoise’s pattern editor. In a similar fashion, is there a way to record MIDI data from BlueARP directly to Renoise’s pattern editor?

BlueARP is great for prototyping cool note sequences, but trying to organize a complete song consisting of many sequences created with BlueARP is very clumsy. I think it would be much more pleasant to design the sequences with BlueARP, record them to Renoise’s pattern editor as direct MIDI data and then use the recorded notes to control VST instruments.

Render to phrase not working for 175 bpm?

October 12, 2020 - 23:21

Hi I’m using render slices to phrase option, to chop up an amen break.
I’m following the steps in the tutorial.

here is the thing, when I chop amen breaks at 145 bpm and 167 bpm, render slice to phrase works perfect.
But as soon as I follow the same steps at 175 bpm the phrase it generates is all messed up,
Not sure whats happening it seems to be pitching everything up an octave. No idea why it’s doing this. Anyone encountered this issue before?
I’m using 175bpm at 8 LPB. The only thing I can think of is that the amen breaks are twice the lenght of the the slower loop…
Presuming I’m missing something really obvious, making silly beginner mistakes etc.
Also noticed if I half my bpm to 72.5 it sounds nearly correct.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Here is what the 175 phrase looks like

I have also added an image of how it is mapped

The more I look into it, it seems like renoise is pitching the loop up an octave for some reason.
Totally baffled…

Rotating pattern blocks

October 12, 2020 - 14:28

Hey dudes, had a cool idea last night that I think some of you may like. The basic idea is that when you hover over a block in the pattern matrix there would be an option to rotate the whole pattern by a certain number of lines either backwards or forwrds, this could be set in song options (number of lines of rotation) and depending on if you click and the drag the block from the top or bottom, this would determine direction. I believe this tool would give rise to a lot of unusual rhythms and song structures. It kind of turns the matrix blocks into like a rotating abacus or something similar

Re-edits and Bootlegs for DJing

October 12, 2020 - 14:01

Hi all,

after a long abscence to Renoise I again came back to this wonderful tool.

I would like to make Re-Edits and Bootlegs from some songs that I can use in my DJ-sets.
The Sample Page is a mighty tool and I wanted to ask for some hints on best workflows or Videotutorials for this kind of work (Sampler and Sample Slicer).

F.e. do you use Renoise to chop-up (cut-up) a whole song into different samples or is there another software better suited.
Are ther some MUST-HAVE plugins for this kind of use?

Thanks for your help

Changing MIDI Channel in Editor FX Column

October 11, 2020 - 10:39

Hi Friends!

I was trying to understand whether it would be possible to use a Renoise instrument sending out MIDI to control other stuff and change MIDI OUT channel for the same Renoise instrument by typing in commands in the Editor…

… I’ve been looking for olders posts about this subject and I couldn’t find anything (but maybe it’s my own fault).

I see I could be creating a different instrument for each different channel, but I wanted to make sure this was the only solution.

Thank you in advance!

Redux: audio inputs

October 11, 2020 - 08:09

As the title says, allowing audio inputs on redux would allow reusing Redux Fx, doofers, etc. It could be implemented as a sample on the waveform or as a whole instance thing.

Extra points if patterns (phrases), that ignore notes and commands, were available for envelopes, pan and filtering. Then it could come pretty near replacing CamelSpace.

PS: I cram this here, but what stops me using Redux as my only sampler is that velocity can’t modulate the sample start point. This is a 101 feature on a sampler IMO. It limits its usage as drum sampler.

Certain GUI widgets not loading until mouseover on macOS Big Sur

October 10, 2020 - 16:16

Hi,

Renoise is not loading popup GUI widgets, such as menus and tooltips, but instead shows them as flat light gray until I hover mouse over them. I started getting this issue fairly recently – I am not 100% exactly when, because I initially expected this to be just a temporary glitch that would disappear. I’m fairly certain it appeared only after I decided to update macOS to Big Sur beta.

A more detailed description: When I open any pulldown menu, it is initially shown as flat light gray. Then, when I move the mouse over the menu, it gets rendered correctly. However, if I open a submenu, then that is blank until I hover over that, too.

In addition to the menus, this also affects all tooltips and things like the Preferences window, Tool Browser and Scripting Editor. After the cursor has been over the widget, the widget stays visible even after the mouse is moved elsewhere, but if the menu is closed, when it is reopened it is blank again.

GUI preferences (“GUI effects & animations”, “Enable Retina HiDPI display support” and others) don’t seem to affect this. Furthermore, I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Renoise, but that didn’t help either.

I am on macOS Big Sur 11.0 Beta (20A5374i) and Renoise 3.2.2. Is this a known issue? Has anyone encountered something similar? Is there anything I can do?

Thanks!
