How to set a track to Polyphony 1

April 10, 2024 - 14:25

Hey guys,

New to Renoise.

Just trying to figure out how to make samples cut each other off in 1 track? Currently using the 3 x Amigo samplers in 1 track and cant figure out how to make the whole tracks Polyphony to 1.

I basically need the 3 Amigo Plugins to cut each other off when playing.

Cheers

Todd Rundgren Speak!... Video Toaster-Amiga>>>

April 10, 2024 - 14:03

Came across the other day. Todd Rundgren discussing using Video Toaster with a buncha Amigas to produce a digital music video that was actually pretty impressive for 1990-91. Most might not know that he’s quite intelligenter than many (jokingly)…

Things were hard & expensive back then-

Amigavideo.net – 5 Aug 19 Todd Rundgren Speak! | amigavideo.net

No ads…GOOD!

There is a personal back story to this but only for the morbidly curious… Back in 1981 could not get a job in SoCal area because I was not BiLingual…So thought I’d visit AF recruiter to see about auditioning as a bassist for Air Force Stage Band, He said sure, setup date & said hey you want company? There’s a gal who wants to try as well… I said ‘OK’. Well on the day we drove up to Edwards AFB all she talked about was Todd Rundgren the whole way & how smart he was, etc, etc… Didn’t listen much just thought she was a crazed groupie. Well recruiter gave wrong directions which made us over an hour late so they were pissed. They put fast paced sheet music in front of me & by bars 5-6 I was faltering so they did it again twice I was outta there in 5 minutes total waste of time… The gal didn’t even try after seeing what an example they made of me…

So 43 year later I find she was quite correct about Rundgren being a Brainiac!

Song render to disk issue with ADAT

April 9, 2024 - 14:40

Hi,

I am using my Behringer UMC 1820 as an ADAT interface for my Yamaha O2R mixing desk, sending various mix channels out to the desk, via ADAT out 1-8, and returning any outboard gear back through the desk (either stereo out or bus 1 and 2) into a line input, using ADAT in 1 & 2 in Renoise.

The mix channel receives the Line Input, but something funny happens when trying to render the output to disk.

The ADAT outputs switch to Out 1/2, so whilst they are output to disk, it means the ADAT input path is the wrong level, and so are the renoise output channels!

I have attached a gif of the issue, so you can see it swap over. Is this a bug, or is there something I need to set somewhere? I have checked other posts but they don’t reflect my issue, and are from a long time ago, so things may have since changed.

As requested in the sticky post:

Issue

Outputs switching when trying to render song to disk

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Renoise
  2. Set a few tracks to output to ADAT
  3. Assign a #Line-in component to an empty track, and assign its INPUT to ADAT in, using Live recording mode, and assign its OUTPUT to Master
  4. Go to File → Render song to disk
  5. Choose RealTime render

Expected Result

Only the ADAT Input channel is recorded as it is fed through to the Master output, as the others are set to ADAT out.

Actual Result

All Renoise mix channels that were set to ADAT out are switched to Out 1/2, so the output from the Mixing desk isn’t replicated in the generated wav file. Renoise Mix channels switch back to ADAT output when complete.

Definitely an edge case usage, I know, but hoping you can help, as I’m really enjoying using a tracker again after many years without Octamed

Thanks in advance, and thanks for an awesome application!

It took 12 years, but I'm back!

April 9, 2024 - 14:19

I recently got fed up with the daily grind and decided I needed a creative outlet, so I came back to Renoise. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since I was last active here! Even though back then I could have said I understood Renoise pretty well, 12 years, many trips around the world, far too many concussions, and it is now like some alien software that is almost intimidating to try to learn again. I don’t even have my MIDI gear anymore and now they use mostly USB or hookups I’ve never even heard of before. How’s the community doing?

Can Virtual Keyboard -> Pitchbend "Macro Mapping" be mapped to a Modulation item?

April 9, 2024 - 00:29

Hi, can I use LUA API to map the Virtual Keyboard Pitchbend, to, say, ya know, the Pitch control in the Modulation?

I don’t really understand this stuff:

-- Access the MIDI pitch-bend macro renoise.song().instruments[].pitchbend_macro -> [returns renoise.InstrumentMacro] -- Access the MIDI modulation-wheel macro renoise.song().instruments[].modulation_wheel_macro -> [returns renoise.InstrumentMacro]

Ok I get that i can access the pitchbend_macro, and i can even get info as to where it is mapped, but can i make it be mapped to something?

there’s even a method: mapping but i don’t know how to access it

Equal Division Microtuning WITHOUT external tools/plugins

April 8, 2024 - 21:48

As you may know, there is a tool available to load scala files and retune an instrument to the scala file. This tool is great, however, it has limitations; as far as I know, there is no way for it to be compatible with soundfont type instruments that have different samples for different note ranges, and this technique works around that.
To do this, go to the pitch modulation of the instrument, add a key tracker, and then make its effect positive or negative depending on if you want a higher or lower amount of notes per octave (I think this could theoretically work with equal divisions of non-octave intervals as well, but I’m not mathematically savvy enough to intuitively know), and then adjust the pitch range to set the divisions. I just do it by ear until the octave interval sounds pure.
This technique is kind of janky but it works good enough for me. I was able to get 17EDO by having negative pitch key tracking with the pitch range set to 17.5. I compared it with the scala-tuned 17EDO and they were indistinguishable to my ear.
I’d attach a project file to demonstrate this, but I apparently am too new of a user to post files. Hopefully someone can get some use out of this.

Non-mouse input devices

April 8, 2024 - 21:25

I forget everything I think of or read, so I write it down but then I have a habit of losing written notes, so I’m going to start keeping track of stuff in this forum in the hopes that I might remember and other people might find it useful. If I come across as authoritative, it’s because that’s how I write notes to myself, and it helps me to learn. The reality is I know nothing, and you’ll gather that from how simplistic some of the points are. Issues are in italics

Non-mouse input devices

  1. I’ve tried to learn Renoise’s keyboard workflow, which seems much quicker than using the mouse, but nearly all the shortcuts are just a bit annoying for me. Here is my slightly alternative approach, which might seem a bit backwards but is working well and I’m finally, gradually, getting quicker:
    a) Delete all keybindings
    b) Start working on a track
    c) As soon as you need to do anything, try to find it in the keybindings list and assign to something convenient. Make a note of the keybinding, then never use the mouse to do that thing
    d) If you can’t find it in the keybindings, see if there’s a tool that does it, download and assign to a convenient keybinding. Here is a thread detailing lots of related tips and tools
    e) Just keep repeating and refining this until you’ve developed your own idiosyncratic system which fits your way of working. You’ll memorise things as you go and all the most common things will have the most basic shortcuts.
  • Sometimes there’s something you do at the beginning which you only do once - it gets a high-ease shortcut which it doesn’t really deserve, so in that case you sub it out for a more common action.
  • I guess learning to script so you can make your own keybinding functions would be the next step but I have literally no idea how to do this.
  1. MIDI controller input lets you make more expressive note entries in less time than the computer keyboard, due to both note and velocity being entered simultaneously. I like this little-known, cheap and cheerful ‘acorn masterkey 25’ - light-ish, decent-sized keys and very little wasted space, plus a few useful controllers:

I find these MIDI assignments useful:
Fader to gainer effect on master track, pre-limiter
Knob 4 to step length (a bit finnicky but better than nothing - sometimes it’s hard to get it to settle on exactly the right value, so the workflow improvement factor is lost)
Knob 3 to BPM - Renoise doesn’t write this to automation so if you want that, assign to a hydra routed to BPM. Though I find that it’s very easy to mess this up and end up making loads of accidental BPM modulations.
Knob 1 and 2 - whatever, assign freely for recording automations other than CC1 and PB
  • The masterkey is a bit big to always carry around with you. Korg microkey is a smaller option which still features proper mod and pitch wheels, but no other knobs or faders.
  • It would be useful if Renoise allowed transformation of incoming MIDI so that 0-127 could be mapped to a useful editstep range e.g.0-32, maybe xRules could facilitate this? The better solution would be to be able to reprogram the controller, but you can’t, and the controllers I’ve seen that do have this ability are all unacceptably large.
  1. Contour Multimedia Controller Pro / Contour Shuttle Pro.

This is a great product - moderately pricey but available at about 40-60% rrp on ebay. Mine was about £50. Jogwheel, shuttle and buttons all freely user-assignable. Solidly-built and way more flexible than a MIDI controller for functions other than note entry and recording automation.

    • Assign keypresses to the transitions between shuttle positions rather than the positions themselves to avoid weird behaviour repeating keypresses as you release the shuttle wheel. Jogwheel works as you’d expect. I’ve assigned jog to up/down and shuttle to right/left
    • Shuttle only has 7 positions in each direction, so I’ve assigned next/previous track to right/left rather than next/previous column, which I’ve set to ctrl-right/left.
    • I’ve assigned all the lower buttons to modifiers or modifier combinations to use in conjunction with the jog, shuttle and middle/upper buttons for a total of 5x13=65 possible functions. Optimum modifier/button combo would be 8 modifiers with 9 button for 9x9=81 possible functions.
    • Value Stepper tool is a great use of the modifiers + jogwheel behaviour.
    • It says it’s plug and play but it seems to actually need driver installation
    • I’d rather the shuttle was just a concentric 2nd jogwheel but it isn’t, so there
  2. You can automate keypresses in Renoise using midi2qwerty16 from the pizmidi collection. Use cases include:

    • making a video which features changes between views at particular moments
    • some kind of generative application using row probabilities, phrases and note entry
    • I don’t know what else, but there seems to be a lot of potential for some quite fun stuff
  • midi2qwerty16 only works for me when the native plugin editor window both has focus AND I’ve clicked around in the manual value entry fields, which limits its potential somewhat.
  • Unpinning the editor and moving it to a 2nd monitor, then keeping it focused, helps
  • I don’t think this happens in every DAW so perhaps it’s something to do with Renoise’s bridging for 32bit VSTis or Renoise blocking the generated keypresses in some way. If you didn’t need the window open and weirdly ‘active’ there’d be a lot more potential here.

There, I hope that a) reminds me of some stuff, and b) is of use to someone else. Cheers!

When you first started with renoise, how did you learn the keyboard shortcuts?

April 8, 2024 - 19:48

ive been trying to use the shortcuts as much as i can but there are so many. i’ve seen some people say delete them all and create your own. i did try to print out the xml for my current keybindings but the page comes up blank for some reason.

either way - i was curious if anyone had any tips on learning them to be more efficient!

Can Disk Browser have a menu entry.+ shortcut for loading a wavefile in a specific way?

April 8, 2024 - 15:50

Let’s say I click on a wavefile to select it in Disk Browser

is it possible to press a shortcut to load the sample “in a specific way”. or click on menu_entry to load that selecte dsample “in a specific way”?

the objective is:
a channel has been selected, you special-load the wavefile and it is input as C-4 with 0G01 in effect column, with the selected sample. and if a instrumentbox is selected that already has an instrument, it creates a new instrument for it before printing it to the pattern.

VSTs you REGRETTED buying?

April 8, 2024 - 13:24

Ill start.

Arturia Pigments, it seems like it should be so good but i find the filters really flat sounding and it feels like it takes a lot of work to find good sweetspots when designing a sound. The sweet spots also sound really “vanilla” in my humble opinion.

I would say that Surge XT, which is free, is noticably nicer sounding and more fun to work with.

How about anyone else?

Bug / improvement request: if unable to remove script - tell the user what the issue is

April 8, 2024 - 01:49

here’s a cryptic error:

you know what it is? well, you don’t, because the error says nothing informative.

what causes this error? a .xrnx script that has .git/ + .github/ folder content in it.

please can we make the error more informative, instead of saying “(unknown error)” - say that there’s files in the folder that need to be removeded?

Creating Preferences for a Tool?

April 6, 2024 - 18:05

Hi. I wanna save the Preferences of a Tool. Namely, I now (finally, 13 years later…) have a GUI that lets me dynamically create shortcuts for the Native Devices.
But when I go to modify the script, or restart Renoise, they are, obviously, lost.

Now, if only there was some way of saving a preference with the enabled Shortcuts, and then recreating them at will.

Maybe this would mean that there’d be a way of initializing the LUA GUI from the Preferences, and showing which ones are already there in the preferences (= therefore already created as shortcuts).

but what I don’t know is what is the method for getting this action going.

LUA Crash with GUI buttons

April 6, 2024 - 16:48

this seems to cause a crash:

local action_buttons = vb:horizontal_aligner { mode = "distribute", width = "100%", vb:button { text = "Load Device(s)", width = "40%", notifier = function() loadSelectedNativeDevices() end }, vb:button { text = "Load Device(s) & Close", width = "60%", notifier = function() loadSelectedNativeDevices() if custom_dialog and custom_dialog.visible then custom_dialog:close() end end }, vb:button { text = "Cancel", width = "100%", notifier = function() if custom_dialog and custom_dialog.visible then custom_dialog:close() end end } }

am using macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and Renoise 3.4.3 (?) on Apple Silicon.

Flash Card Tips and Tricks

April 6, 2024 - 15:01

Thought maybe it was a good idea to start a thread on very simple tips and tricks that can be easily implemented, are quick and can be understood by anybody.Hopefully it works out…could be good…lets see.
Maybe put the tip in bold or something so anybody can quickly scan the thread.

I have a new rule i just started implementing and it seems to work really well.
Whenever i EQ something i will make a point to notch a frequency out as well, could be a large notch could be a tiny notch could be a lot of gain could be very little. The point is,

Whenever i EQ i will ALWAYS notch.

In the end, over multiple tracks and hundreds of samples, this rule makes a huge difference.

Renoise Visuals

April 6, 2024 - 14:12

I think it would be very cool if Renoise had a naitive visualizer that could be coded in LUA or something else.

Without being too lengthy maybe utilizing the ability to use an openGL script, puredata GEM, winamp video plug-in, or something similar to the scripts used for touchdesigner or wallpaper engine.

Not a shameless self promo but i use the stock Renoise spectogram for creating visuals often. This can be seen on my instagram. @.vifyrv.

Does anybody else have any thoughts on this? I am curious if anybody would be interested or excited in seeing something like this become available in the future?

Sample editor waveforms

April 5, 2024 - 17:59

Hi guys can anyone tell me why despite the sample editor showing this professionally mastered house track as completely clipped and maxed out. Yet when I play it renoise doesn’t clip (with track volume set to 0db).

I’m getting in to mastering more seriously atm and this is really bugging me as renoise seems to pushing us towards an unrealistically quiet (by 2024 standards) volume for our tracks. Not looking for a loudness wars discussion but any insights are appreciated, is renoise even the right tool for analysing tracks like this?

Cheers
