Convolver Color - what EQ is applied?

February 19, 2024 - 16:28

On certain IRs the color slider sounds fantastic, and I wish I could print that setting to the impulse response so I could use it elsewhere - do we know exactly what the colour slider does so I could replicate it?

Thanks!

New tool: Parameter Lock

February 18, 2024 - 17:13

I really liked working on the digitakt and digitone when I had them. I would abuse Plocks, I found them to be an easy way to modulate without ruining my original sound, which is the problem I often run into when trying to automate parameters in DAWs.

I have crafted a crude tool to simulate this functionality. You will find two hotkeys, one for “short” and one for “long” parameter locks. It works like this:

  1. type in your effect column parameter automation the parameter you want to “lock”
  2. activate the hotkey
  3. the “short” hotkey will place the original (read: currently set) values before and after your plock. This means that your sound is only changed for that step. The “long” version of the hotkey moves the “after” original value to the next note. This means your sound is changed for the entire note.

It’s important to consider that renoise actively adjusts the parameters based on their last played automation, so it’s important to be diligent when using this that the parameter you want to lock is set to the settings you like it at. I would advise you use this while renoise is paused. Other than that, it is pretty straightforward.

I’m not a programmer so I expect this to break under lots of use cases, but hopefully not. I don’t have a ton of time to test it right now and it seems to be working so I thought I would share it. Please feel free to let me know if it doesn’t work and I will have a go at fixing it.

Different Fonts for Patterncolums?

February 18, 2024 - 14:53

Hello, i am currently working on a Renoise color theme based on Fasttracker II’s “Blues” color theme.
I also recreated the “Future”-Font from ft2 as a TrueTypeFont and i am in the process to do so with the other bitmap fonts.

Is there by chance any way to change the fonts in the patterneditor individually,
so that delay/pan/volume or effects would be given a separate font as it used to be in ft2?
Or is this just one fixed font for all of the patterneditor?

Since there are XML tags in Config.xml for different fontstyles throughout the UI, i was wondering, if there might be a way to style the individual columns via PatternConfig.xml that might not be documented, since now it’s only used to define different fontsizes for the patterneditor to be selected from the configurationdialog.

Here is a screenshot of my work in progress:

And a Screenshot of Ft2 Clone for comparison:

Greetings and happy tracking

Renoise freezed and doesn't open anymore (Mac)

February 17, 2024 - 11:51

Hey guys!

I was working on Renoise and when I saved my project it freezed, so I had to force quit it. Now when I try to open Renoise it halts to the point where it is “Starting MIDI subsystems”.

I got version 3.4.1 running on Macbook Pro / Monterey. I’ve got this setup approx. 2 years now, it’s not connected to internet and I haven’t installed any new plugins or updates. It’s been a completely closed system.

Anyone got any ideas, how to fix this? Thanks!

Most XLN XO VSTs wont load correctly

February 17, 2024 - 02:09

Please point me in the right direction if a post like this already exists.

I have been having troubles with vst instruments loading with a black bar at the top and being unaligned. Namely XLN XO. I’m not sure what is causing the problem or if this is something I can fix. It’s almost as if the GUI map is usually larger than the pixels of the visual.

Has anybody else had this problem?

(v3.1+) Repeater BPM Sync Failure

February 16, 2024 - 13:51

(v3.1+) Repeater BPM Sync Failure

The Repeater’s Divisor setting takes the BPM into account when grabbing the sound slice, since the Divisor is a fraction of the beat length. At least that’s how it used to work when it was introduced in v2.8 up to v3.0.

Something changed in v3.1, where it no longer does this when changing the BPM. Even returning the BPM back to the first value has the repeats out of sync. This is clearly not how it’s supposed to work, since reloading the song again puts it back in sync.

Edit - Interestingly it works properly if the BPM is changed via effect commands or graphical automation. The problem seems to be when manually changing the setting in the Transport Panel.

New Tool (3.3): Repeater Notation

February 15, 2024 - 22:10

Repeater Notation - Renoise Tool

> Download Repeater Notation Tool

The Repeater captures a chunk of sound from what’s playing, but odd timings make it impossible to write music to match it. But what if you could, for example, have the kick drum follow exactly what the Repeater is doing?

This tool inserts notes into the Pattern Editor that match Repeater timings. It can be done manually or by linking to a Repeater and using its effect commands to track the changes made.

Limitations (v1.0)

  • Only uses data from effect commands, not graphical automation
  • If the Sync setting is automated, its changes are not taken into account
  • Contiguous repeats before the current pattern/selection can affect the rhythm in ‘Repeats - Sync’ mode if there’s no initial ‘Mode - Off’ to break them up

FabFilter Pro-Q3 (VST3) not reacting to automation commands

February 15, 2024 - 06:39

I’m trying to automate a filter sweep using automation commands, but the plugin isn’t responding to the commands nor graphical automation.

  1. I am running two instances of Pro-Q3 (VST 3), one for EQ and a secondary one purely as a filter.

  2. Set Secondary EQ as sweep in, use linear fill to fill in automation commands.

  3. Should filter sweep but doesn’t respond to commands whatsoever.

note: I’ve also tried sandboxing the plugin and also using VST 2 version, but it doesn’t seem to work. Any ideas?
I’ve also attached an image for illustration purposes as well.

Thanks

H.

Which piano roll tool are you using?

February 15, 2024 - 01:22

I have decided to finally try one of these piano rolls I have seen before. There’s a few of them so I was wondering which one you are using, for those who are using one, that is.

I do not need the one with the most features. All I really want is reliable, stable, not many glitches or strange behaviors. Just something that works how you would expect it to, and is easy to learn. Something that integrates well with the main software.

Found that on mastodon today and I think you’ll like it.

New Tool (3.4) chunk_chops

February 14, 2024 - 09:05

In response to the latest video from @GroovinG and inspired by a comment from @muximori on Discord, here is a tool to aid chopping up your own patterns into new variations.

chunk_chops

Provides two key-bindings in Pattern Editor / Tools

  • Render Chunk Pattern
  • Render Chunk Pattern With New Seed

They are available in the context menu of the pattern editor as well.

setup
  • Have the first track in your project be empty, this will be your chunk track
  • Name it so it starts with @
  • Have two FX columns
usage
  • Type chunking information into your chunk track
  • Run one of the Render… commands mentioned above
  • Alternatively, enable Render / On Change in the settings (on by default)
chunking
  • The first FX column controls what pattern to take the chunk from
  • The second FX column can control what lines to take
pattern commands

You need to have one of these in the first FX column to start a new chunk

  • -Pxx : chunk from pattern at index xx
  • -Sxx : chunk from sequence step xx
  • -Uxx : chunk from xx above the current sequence step
  • -Dxx : chunk from xx below the current sequence step
  • -Rxx : chunk from a random pattern with seed xx
  • -Exx : chunk from a new random pattern every line with seed xx
  • -O-- : stop chunking (works like OFF commands for notes, without it the chunk will continue until the end of the pattern or another pattern command)
pattern flags

Append to the front of an existing pattern command

  • S--- : only chunk a single line
line commands

By default, chunks start copying from the same line where they start at.

For example a chunk starting in the middle of the pattern will copy from the middle of the other pattern. You can modify this using line commands in the second FX column.

The first character will determine the type of line selection

  • --xx : the default mode, offsets by xx lines
  • Bmxx : specify the line offset in terms of beats
  • Lxxx : specify an absolute line number
  • Rmxx : start from a random line with seed xx

The second character will set what the xx values mean

  • -Dxx : start chunking xx below the current line
  • -Uxx : start chunking xx above the current line
  • -Rxx : sample random lines with seed xx (for beat mode only the beat will be picked randomly, the rest of the chunk will stay as it was, otherwise each line will be sampled from a new random location)
examples
  • chunk from pattern 1

-P01 ----

  • chunk from beat 4 of the pattern at the second sequence step

-S02 B004

  • chunk from 4 lines below the current line from a random pattern

-R00 -D04

  • chunk at a random line from 4 sequence above

-U04 R000

  • chunk at a random beat from 5 sequence above

-U05 BR00

  • chunk completely random lines from pattern 8

-P08 RR00

  • copy a single line from 8 from the pattern 4

SP04 L008

additional commands

There are a few more commands you can use inside the Vol or Pan columns of the first note column.

  • K- : keep the line as it is (useful for when you want to preserve some handwritten lines while chunking the rest)
  • C- : clear the line
  • N- : no rendering, everything will be skipped after this

If you want to protect an entire pattern from re-rendering simply mute the chunk track at the particular step in the pattern matrix (middle click on a pattern).

Transpose the chunked notes

  • Dx : lower by x semitones
  • Ux : raise by x semitones
  • Bx : lower to x octaves below
  • Ax : raise to x octaves above

Transpose the instrument of notes

  • Ix : raise by x
  • Jx : lower by x

If you want to cover more lines with the same transposition your can repeat any of these with zero for x, this will transponse to whatever value is at the top of the chain. For example this will raise four consecutive lines by 4 semitones.

U4 U0 U0 U0
  • OFF: you can put an OFF into the note column to write a note off across all tracks
settings
  • Track Prefix sets what you need in your track’s name to be recognized as a chunk track
Render
  • On Change - enable to have your chunking get auto-rendered whenever you change lines
  • Watch Interval - ticks to wait before auto-rendering after lines changed (increase this if the auto-rendering is too quick for you)
  • Render - run a render now
Randomness

Random commands use a seed to have randomly generated values stay reproducible, you can unlock this seed to have each render get a new seed, otherwise you can change the xx values after random commands to have a new offset from the seed (and so a new random output). You can also force a seed change using the Render with new seed commands.

  • Lock Seed - keep the random seed locked
  • $eed to Track - write the seed into the name of the track as $seed to preserve the seed for the song, otherwise your seed might change between project (since it is saved globally with the tool preferences)
Pattern
  • Pattern Format - set how numbers are interpreted for pattern commands (decimal or hexadecimal)
  • Line Format - same for line and beat indices
  • Automation - toggle chunking automation info (this might not work as well)

Note: if you set a format to decimal but have a hexadecimal value in you chunk track like -P0A it will still get interpreted as hex.

Colors
  • Change - enable changing the chunk track’s color while editing and rendering
  • Assign Edited - press this to assign the currently selected track’s color as edited color
  • Assign Rendered - same as above for the rendered color
download

see the source on gitlab

download from direct link (this zip includes all my other tools as well)

Note, this is a beta version, the commands might change a bit after more testing.

Tell me what you think!

Some recent VST3 plugins break Renoise's GUI & cause a hard crash

February 11, 2024 - 00:03

Since a few weeks ago, I’ve run into several recent plugins that heavily break Renoise’s GUI, essentially making the application unusable, and often also hard crash the entire host. The simplest way to trigger this, which works consistently pretty much every time is:

  1. Open the plugin editor window.
  2. Click on any of Renoise’s dropdown menus on the menu bar.

Instead of the obvious expected result, Renoise’s GUI just “dims” out, as if to indicate it being out of focus or presence of some modal dialog. The GUI becomes uninteractable via mouse, and generally inoperable. Keyboard shortcuts still work, but even trying to open a new project will just hang Renoise indefinitely.

Video example of this behavior: https://i.imgur.com/EKilyb8.mp4

I’ve so far found three vendors with whose plugins this bug occurs:

  1. Sub Ninja by The Him DSP (demo, or available for free)
  2. NA 501 Chorus Echo by Nembrini Audio (demo version)
  3. Codec by Lese (free, happens also with the Sweep plugin, which is also free)

All of these plugins are only available as VST3, not VST2.

In addition to the GUI just “bugging out”, Renoise also becomes completely unstable, and often crashes almost immediately afterwards, or within a handful of seconds. Here’s another example of triggering the bug with the Codec plugin, and then clicking back on the plugin GUI, causing Renoise to hard crash immediately: https://i.imgur.com/Ci6h9on.mp4

I’m not seeing any obvious connection between these plugins, especially considering that they’re from different vendors. I do kind of suspect that they might be using JUCE, which perhaps introduced some sort of incompatibility in a recent update. Other than that I don’t have any good guesses what might be the culprit behind all three (or four) of these. Just overall the fact that this happens with several completely unrelated plugins makes me thing that the issue here might be with Renoise this time around, or that it’s at least worth taking a look at.

The logs don’t really contain anything too helpful, but here’s a relevant bit pertaining to the second crash anyway:

Vst3Plugs: Instantiating: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\Lese\codec.vst3\Contents\x86_64-win\codec.vst3…
Vst3Plugs: Failed to apply initial component state to controller (not critical)

Error Message: Ouch. The VST3 plugin ‘Lese: Codec’ crashed in its editor window.
Error Message: IMPORTANT: This is a fatal error. Please save the current document under a !new! name to prevent losing important data.
Error Message: It’s most likely that this is a bug in the VST plugin, so please report this problem to the authors of this plugin in order to get the problem fixed!

I’m using Renosie 3.4.3 and an up to date Windows 10 installation, with up to date NVIDIA drivers.
