New tool (3.4.3): Travel Through Phrases v1.0 build 046 (October 2023)

October 7, 2023 - 22:42
1. What is “Travel Through Phrases” or “TTP”?

The Travel Through Phrases, also known as TTP, is a powerful and lightweight «dual data direction tool module» oriented for browsing, listening, creating, cloning, direct recording and configuration of instrument phrases from the Pattern Editor with multiple utilities, such as importing to phrase from the current line, importing to phrase by selection or even by adaptive live recording, allowing moving or copying data and even compress them (remove unnecessary note columns or empty lines, or even add final lines to complete the last step). It is also built to be able to deposit entire phrases into the Pattern Editor from the current line and the current note column, even in a continuous loop, thus providing a «two-way data system» between the Pattern Editor and the Phrase Editor of Renoise.

It offers multiple control capabilities, both for keyboard commands (specially designed for them), and for the mouse through a compact floating window (with click, double click and wheel), as well as for MIDI input (focused for a 16-pad MIDI pad or similar). The TTP tool is exclusive for the Renoise DAW (64 bit, v3.4.3) or future versions.

Travel Through Phrases. An original tool for Renoise.

On the other hand, the Travel Through Phrases has unique features thanks to its «Phrase Monitor» panel, such as the thumbnail view of the current phrase, an instrument browser, a phrase browser, an agile mobile browser of phrases for previewing, a bar comparator on quantities of lines of the pattern-track of the Pattern Editor and the phrase, which allows better control of the loop copy. Additionally, the Phrase Monitor panel allows you to easily edit the properties of each phrase with the mouse wheel, including a quick timer to change a specific property across multiple phrases, such as the phrase’s «LPB» value or the «Base Note» of the phrase. All of this allows for more skillful visual and listening control on instruments with a large number of phrases, compared to Renoise‘s Phrase Editor and its own browser.

In addition, the «MIDI Input Controls» panel offers customizable and fixed profiles that change the complete configuration of the entire Pad x16 in a single step, allowing these profiles to be changed on the fly. This design allows you to quickly change all settings on the linked USB MIDI pad controller, without the need to re-route MIDI links.

In short, with all this arsenal of specific options, Travel Through Phrases is a powerful tool, designed by and for the management of phrases, being able to skillfully use the Phrase Editor as if it were a data repository, even similar to a multiple clipboard, allowing not only to easily create new phrases, but also to get rid of them by depositing all the information in the Pattern Editor, resulting in a very practical and flexible 2 in 1.

This is another multi-tool for Renoise created and programmed by ulneiz that also includes a sponsor, which means that it has received previous support and encouragement from the «Community of Renoise» to be able to start developing it. This unified tool brings together most of the features requested by other composers for working with phrases and the Pattern Editor. Thank you very much for facilitating the expansion of Renoise with its ecosystem of Lua tools!

Workaround for VST window keyboard midi focus problem on Linux

October 6, 2023 - 11:40

Hi
I’ve made a very simple script to help with the problem where when you’re focused on the VST window on Linux you can’t play midi notes with the keyboard.

It requires python and the sendmidi application to be installed. By default it sends messages to “Renoise MIDI in Port A”

Basically it reads codes directly from the /dev/input in your system. You have to change it in the script to your keyboard path.

You “chmod +x” it and run it as sudo, and press F12 to toggle enabling it.

All these details are inside the code:
https://pastebin.com/TALuA2hT

I hope it’ll be helpful. If anyone needs some fixes for it or additions let me know.

Edit:
I’ve noticed there’s another one below! Sorry for the double. Mine works a bit differently so maybe it will also be useful.

Add "system audio device"

October 4, 2023 - 07:30

Just like in Ableton, please also provide the “system audio device” as choice.

Ableton:

Since the system device is a flexible device, which selects the last possible / accessible device audiomatically. This featue is essential for mobile devices (e.g. Notebook). You often will disconnect from a stationary usb audio device, or using a docking station, and then only the internal audio device is available, or another one. In this case Renoise currently “forgets” about your usb audio device, and selects the last one in the last, in my case often my HDMI monitor. Next time you connect it, you then will have to manually re-select the usb audio device again. Which is quite cumbersome and also can already happen on sleep.

If you have time please leave a little review on all the tracks. There not that many and people worked hard on them. They deserve some feedback.

Judging criteria:
The idea of this MBC was to work together as a team and combine two unlikely genres.

How is the overall production?
And which track speaks the most to you?

Pitching slices not original sample

October 3, 2023 - 14:36

So I loaded a sample, sliced it, synced the slices using timestretch, transposed the samples down two octaves, programmed in sustain loops then used the method of playing a note in the note column to control the pitch and used the S command to select the slice.
Instead of playing the slices that I adjusted it simply referenced the original loop ignoring my sustain loops, adjustment to pitch and timestretch.
Is there a way to get it to play the slices rather than reference the original loop?

Bridge bug while vst2 hosting

October 3, 2023 - 14:02

This intel only (bridged on arm) plugin’s GUI is not closable anymore in 3.4.3, macos arm. Maybe this indicates a general error in the bridge code? Pretty sure, it worked before. JFYI.

You might try to open the GUI multiple times, if it closes normally.

Hello, everyone!

We are happy to announce that submissions for TRACKERCORPS VOL. 2: Go Acid are now OPEN!

TRACKERCORPS is a multi-artist music compilation that aims to celebrate the foundation of computer-made and homebrew electronic music: trackers!

The first edition was released in July 2023, with 15 tracks made exclusively in trackers and infused with breakbeats:

In Vol. 2 we’ll be celebrating the good ol’ 303 sounds - whether they’re made in an actual Roland TB-303 or not. So crank the resonance up in your LPFs and Go Acid, nerds!

Read all the rules HERE before submitting your stuff. It only takes 5-10 minutes.

Schedule:
Deadline: 1/January/2024
Results: TBD (depends on the number of submissions)
Release: 3/March/2024 (aka ‘303 Day’)

Genre suggestions:
Breakcore, IDM, Electro, Acid. Preferably ‘high’ BPM. Exceptions allowed.

C FX Command only works in the volume column for VSTs

October 1, 2023 - 20:12

I noticed that the Cut FX only works in the volume column for VSTS (Midi), but not when you place it in the fx column. Would be handy if you could also use them in the FX columns to stop midi notes.

Bigger/Expandable Meters

October 1, 2023 - 19:56

love the scaling options for the meters, but they are way to tiny. Maybe they could be expandable in the next version, so one can drag them out, or a new “big meter”. I work with Hardware and try to keep RMS values around -18dBFS and making fine adjustments is really almost impossible.

Is this processor utilisation normal?

October 1, 2023 - 14:53

I have a Thinkpad with a AMD 4750u, with Windows 11

I was having some major CPU utilisation issues a few weeks ago but an update to the GPU (and a full, and time consuming fresh install) seemed to of fixed it in Ableton but not in Renoise.

I’m just checking this is “normal”? I know Renoise multicore support maybe isn’t as efficient at Abletons.

My projects tend to grind to a halt after adding a few power hungry VSTs, which is kind of norwal… but i’m not really going overboard here and adding huge stacks.

This is the first time that during rendering the util meter just stayed in 99% the whole way and rendered it very slowly, I opened up task manager and everything seems to be running ok with lots of spare resources… so i’m just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this?

Possible (probable?) bug w.r.t. vst3 parameter flushing

October 1, 2023 - 02:37

Hi!

I think i have found a bug in renoise regarding flushing of vst3 parameters from ui to audio thread. Wrote a small synth plugin that can switch from sine to saw oscillator, and when switching between the 2 modes, sometimes events get lost. I have verified this in the debugger, that sometimes a call (from the ui side) to Steinberg::Vst::EditController::performEdit does not result in an event (on the audio side) in the form of Steinberg::Vst::ProcessData::inputParameterChanges. As a result, some ui interaction “gets lost”.

See below for some screen recordings: clicking around in the ui, switching between sine/saw, does not always get picked up. This problem only happens in renoise and cakewalk, it does not manifest in reaper, waveform, flstudio or bitwig.

Weird behaviour in renoise: https://sjoerdvankreel.github.io/infernal_stuff/renoise_bug_renoise_demo.mp4

Weird behaviour in cakewalk: https://sjoerdvankreel.github.io/infernal_stuff/cakewalk_bug_cakewalk_demo.mp4

Correct behaviour in reaper: https://sjoerdvankreel.github.io/infernal_stuff/renoise_bug_reaper_demo.mp4

Again, waveform, bitwig and flstudio behave without problems like reaper. I can post screen recordings if needed.

Steps to reproduce:

  • git clone --recursive GitHub - sjoerdvankreel/infernal-playground
  • checkout tag bug_demo_1
  • run scripts/build.bat
  • copy vst3 plugin from /dist folder to vst3 folder
  • run renoise demo from /test folder and play around with osc type

If needed i can provide binaries.

Also – i hate to say this but, how much “alive” is renoise? Still got no answer to this Saved automation data does not respect VST3's parameter id. FLStudio suffered the same problem, and i reported simultaneously to renoise and FL, and image line fixed it within 2 months or so.

Just to be clear - i absolutely love renoise. Been a long time user. I’ll take a tracker over a piano roll any day. I hope to be working with renoise for years to come, but, stuff like this should really be fixed (again – excuse me if i’m in the wrong here and the bug is on my side…).

Anyway – end of long post. I hope i dont come across as arrogant – i really really love renoise and i think it is the #1 daw out there. But, i also think it has its flaws in the plugin department. If possible, i’d be open to help out with development every now and then, just small stuff…

-cheers, sjoerd
