Repeater and recording the notes

January 11, 2025 - 08:45

Hi

This might be a really stupid question… I am using the repeater to manipulate a break and using the right hand mouse button to record what I am doing. When I play the song back do I have to turn the repeater on to hear the edits- at the exact time? This seems difficult. Also when I export the song will the edits be there? Sorry I am a newb and this is confusing me

Window frame of tool has the same dimensions in Win-MAC-Linux?

January 10, 2025 - 21:00

This is a bit of a weird question but I need to know if the floating tool window (:show_custom_dialog) has the same dimensions in the frame for the 3 operating systems Windows, MAC and Linux.

That is, if the top bar has the same height in pixels, or the side lines of the frame have the exact same thickness and if the bottom line also has the same thickness.

If we create a tool that needs to calculate the entire window surface and we use an operating system like Windows 11, we need to know if the calculations are going to be exactly the same for MAC and for Linux.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the necessary computers to test all 3 platforms.

I assume that all these dimensions are equal, but I have no way of verifying this.

Request for clarification on VST3 parameter automation update frequency

January 9, 2025 - 23:18

Hi!

I’ve noticed parameter automation in Renoise is not nearly as smooth as in other DAWs (tested Reaper, Bitwig and FLStudio).

Scenario is the following:

Load Surge XT into Renoise, create a single pattern of length 32, BPM 120, LPB 8, play a single C4 note from the start (Surge defaults to saw osci). Add an instrument automation control that varies Surge’s filter cutoff from 0 to max in those 32 lines. So +8 per line. The resulting changes in filter cutoff are audibly stepped. I am running at 48khz with the default 12-ticks-per-line, but varying any of those 2 doesnt seem to help much.
Is this expected behaviour? And if so, why? Reaper and Bitwig, on a similar simple demo, perform filter cutoff modulation absolutely smooth. Sorry if i’m missing something.

So really how often are automated vst3 parameter updates supposed to be sent to the plugin processor?

For some in-depth details: I’m developing my own VST3 plugin (just used Surge as an example because anyone can download it) and these are the results I’m getting when I am debugging automation events in my own synth:

  • Reaper with 160 block size, 48kHz gives me 1 update per block, so 300 per second
  • Renoise with 480 block size, 48kHz gives me 1 update each 8 (!) blocks, so only 12.5 per second
  • Renoise with 128 block size, 48kHz gives me 1 update each 20 (!) blocks, so only 18.75 per second

TBH i have not debugged Bitwig nor Fruity but they do sound smooth, so I am assuming loads of parameter updates in those, too.

Now I know all of this can in theory be solved with internal parameter update filtering in the plugin (actually tried that, sounds smooth with an 150ms or-so low-pass), but that’s an additional 150 ms of latency. Also surely it cannot be the case that a somewhat mainstream synth like Surge behaves so radically different in Renoise vs any other DAW just with default settings?

Any insights and/or clarification greatly appreciated. Or even better please just tell me that i’m wrong and i messed up somewhere:)

Still loving Renoise so thanks once more for a wonderful product.

Mutlitap delay , frequency shifter in feedback l0op

January 7, 2025 - 15:46

I use the multitap delay all the time because it just near perfect, simple to use and sounds amazing .
The only thing it misses is a frequency shifter in the feedback loop (not a pitch shifter ) , the dsp code for a frequency shifter is super easy and the mt delay already has a dropdown + frequency slider for the other filter types .
I’s a win- win scenario , when setting delay time to 0ms and no feedback we get a free frequency shifter as effect to
Do it ;0 !
And happy new year to everybody

Closing Redux Causes VST Host to Freeze for Several Seconds

January 6, 2025 - 16:35

Closing the Redux VST causes my VST host REAPER v7.29 to freeze for several seconds. This happens because for some Reason, Redux creates several temporary files when closing the GUI and that write process is slowed down by Windows 10’s built-in anti virus software:

This is the first time I’m seeing a plugin do this. Why is it necessary and what can we do here? Switching off the anti virus software or making an exception for the temp directory are not an option.

(I was hoping to embed the video but I’m not sure if it will work)

My first song posted in 8 years. Wish I had got back into doing this sooner.

It’s a straightforward plod-along easy listening thing. I’ll try and upload some more of these soon.

If you like it, then my first album is also on Youtube https://youtu.be/8DjRbAgfyb8?si=AHjsIX-xmZw2T_B7 … also on Spotify for the time being.

Thanks

Exported file missing audio from one of my VSTis

January 5, 2025 - 11:35

For some unknown reason, my Vital Audio VSTi volume goes to 0 when I render my project as a file. Every time I render, the “volume level” knob (in the VSTi) goes to 0. I am expecting the VSTi to work normally but it just simply refuses to render with volume. I do not know how this happened. I have made a video which is easier to understand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QLXaLh37fo

Octave Wrapper / Pitch Constrainer / Scale Limiter

January 5, 2025 - 11:05

Not sure how to term this but I’ve got something I’d like to try with a bass instrument (xrni):

I’ve got a couple of saw waves for the mids with the lows rolled off
I’ve also got a sine playing at the same time for the sub freqs
I’d like to be able to play all 8 Octaves with the saws, i.e. the main harmonic content of the bass
But I’d like the sine sub limited to a range (say C2–B3 for argument’s sake) so that if C4 is played it wraps back around to C2

I’ve got this to work through keyzones, but this requires the sine to be duplicated, which is fine really, but I wondered if there was a neater way to achieve this through modulation with keytracking or similar.

New Tool: Web-based OctaMED-to-Renoise converter

January 4, 2025 - 21:47

Hello everyone! This is my first post here and I don’t know if this is the right venue, but here goes:

My brother Al and I have created a web-based OctaMED-to-Renoise song converter, and hosted it online here: https://www.snappymaria.com/mmd-convert/

Does anyone out there still have old OctaMED songs in need of upgrading? (If not, you can stop reading this now…)

We did this in some free time we had over the break, mostly so that Al could port some of his old OctaMED music projects to Renoise. There’s no real documentation of it (other than this thread announcing it), it’s just a blank web page inviting you to drop a .med file on it and maybe get a Renoise .xrns file in return. The conversion takes place in the desktop browser window, so there’s no actual uploading of the music anywhere, it all happens locally on your own machine, usually quite quickly.

This doesn’t work with all the old tracker formats, just OctaMED’s uncompressed save files (MMD0, MMD1, and MMD3, and if you’re lucky MMD2 might just barely work). If you want some files to test it with, I have a few online. Al and I wrote a game called MegaBall for the Commodore Amiga way back in the 1990’s, and Al used OctaMED for all the game’s music, which is now publicly available here: https://bitbucket.org/emackey/megaball/src/master/MB_Music/

Give MBmus24.med a try, for example. Download the .med file, then visit the converter page, and drag-and-drop the .med file onto the banner requesting it, and it should give you its best effort to produce a similar-sounding .xrns Renoise file. It’s not perfect and there are no guarantees or warranties that come with this thing, it’s just a free-time side project.

The basic pattern of notes-in-tracks often survives the conversion best. The commands are trickier, as OctaMED has a very different set of commands than Renoise, but Al and I put together a translation table for ones that are the most similar. The converter will complain about commands that it doesn’t know how to translate, but will finish the conversion anyway. Commands for pitch bending and volume slides may work differently for example, so a song might need manual cleanup after the conversion if it does this kind of thing.

OctaMED also has 8-bit software “Synth” and “Hybrid” modes where synth instructions are applied to waveforms or samples. This stuff doesn’t convert perfectly, but basic synth waveforms are salvaged, and synth/hybrid volume commands are converted to similar Renoise instrument “modulation” volume envelopes. The MBmus24.med song has a few synth and hybrid instruments, which you can find in the converted result by looking through the Renoise sampler’s “modulation” tab for each converted instrument.

Anyway there’s our fun holiday project, I hope you like it! Let me know in the replies here if anyone actually starts using this, and how well that goes. Happy Renoising!
