OSX Big Sur: crash opening old song

March 29, 2022 - 02:42

Renoise 3.4.0 is crashing when trying to open an xrns file originally created in 2009. I had the file successfully running with Renoise 3.3.2 as recently as 03/15/2022 when i created a new version and replaced a vst synth I no longer have with Zebra2. Renoise 3.4.0 crashes if the file is opened from finder or internally using Renoise’s own browser.

I had a very similar problem a couple of years ago that was solved in this topic

Running Big Sur 11.6.5 on a 2018 Mac Mini.

MacOS (mpb - 10.14): Sluggish UI responsiveness in 3.4

March 28, 2022 - 21:09

Long time renoise customer / supporter. It’s been ages since i’ve installed a new version of renoise. After installing 3.4 on a new user profile on my mid2015 mbp (10.14.6) fresh it seems i get incredibly slugish responsiveness from any interaction with the renoise interface. UI resize, browse folder tree, transport controls, all pretty unusable out of the gate.
Am i missing something? checkbox for intel CPU or something?

Looking forward to catching up with an old friend (renoise) but for now, back to FT clone, an even OLDER friend! (which by the way runs like a well oiled tracker on any modern computer/os!! amazing imo)

Psyscope pro vst3: Can't resize window in Renoise

March 28, 2022 - 21:02

I’ve seen this question a couple of times from different people and in different OSes, but I don’t get if it’s the plugins responsibility or the DAW or if the workaraound (at the bottom) is the easies solution.

Example, I’m testning psyscope pro (demoversion), I know this can be resized. I do find the resize corner just above the random button, and i can drag it. This is what happens…

  1. Original look (no resize, but marked out the drag-corner):

  2. Dragging the resize point into the window (to make it smaller). result after releasing button:

(ignore the actual text… demo time expired)

  3. Dragging the resize point out of the window borders to make it bigger, result:

The window by itself is not resizable, it’s fixed.

BUT!!! If you resize the inner content, close the window, then press “ext.editor”-button again, it has taken the necessary size to house the content. (when in the mixer tab that is, havent tested vstis.)

Is this the solution?

Add fill features similar to polyend

March 28, 2022 - 20:12

Hello,
One of the most powerful features in the polyend tracker is the fill feature. It offers a quick yet powerful tool for populating pattern information in useful or surprising ways. I find myself really missing it when using renoise.

Add full bar divisions to slicer "snap to"

March 28, 2022 - 20:04

Hello,
A simple fix for a major source of annoyance of mine would be to add bar, 2 bar, 4 bar, etc divisions to the slicer “snap to”.
Or even better, offer the ability to generate slices based on the grid. I’m currently trying to slice up entire tracks with known bpms and the current way involves way too much clicking for my poor carpal tunnel.

Sidechain behaviour (maybe bug)

March 28, 2022 - 01:01

Hi! i was using the Sidechain device for sidechaining a comressor on a bass sound. The Sidechain is triggered by a kick. It works fine as long as the kick is playing. But then when no kick is playing for a moment and after the gain reduction meter of the comressor reaches 0 again, then it suddenly continues with normal compression triggered by the bass itself. But normally, if sidechain compression is active, this shouldn’t be the case and there should be no more compression until the kick starts playing again. I made a small video to see what i mean:

Mini game controller as keyboard short tool

March 27, 2022 - 18:41

Folks might be interested in a small game controller, the 8Bitdo Lite Bluetooth Gamepad.

8BitDo Lite 8BitDo Lite is an ultra-portable controller made f

I’ve been using it with a drawing program, but I think it would work well with Renoise.

It fits in my hand easily (I actually hold it sideways) so I can draw with my right hand and manage brushes, undo, saving, with my left.

I use it with a small program called JoyToKey:

Fantasy computer keyboard

March 27, 2022 - 14:20

So I’ve been seriously thinking about creating a computer keyboard that resembles the Renoise virtual keyboard layout, which I think is pretty standard in a few DAWs. It’d be useful if you’re travelling and don’t want to drag your midi controller around, and could be a helpful tool for people who can’t afford said midi controllers, or children learning music production.
I was thinking it’d have a small touchpad at the bottom with a button on the side. The button would toggle it between working as a mouse, and a scroll wheel you can use to chance velocity on notes.
The picture is a bit rough, but hopefully it gives you an idea. Of course it’d have flashy lights (also a toggle), so you can really highlight the playable notes. The lights can also be used to highlight specific scales if you want to do that.
Would this be something worth pursuing?

Cheers!

Help with Custom Wave Synth (Renoise Tool)

March 27, 2022 - 13:06

Help please?

An FM/wavetable single-cycle synth sound generator we have in Renoise Tools by @It-Alien

Unlike the other Tool called Generate Waveform, this one does update the sound while you’re working on it, but it does not maintain the “Loop Mode”. Every time I generate a new sound, it also resets the looping mode, which slows dow the process substantially, because it has to be reset to “Forward” every time.

Is there a quick way to adjust the code somewhere in the Tool to make this not happen, like the other Generate Waveform Tool?

Linux: Jack Transport currently disabled (Renoise 3.4)

March 26, 2022 - 17:44

In new 3.4 Jack Transport is not available any more. Instead of the button there’s a text sayin
“Jack Transport: currently disabled”.

In 3.2.2 it still works.

Is there a setting I’m missing, is this on purpose or simply a bug?

This being fixed, the automation highlight updates almost works perfectly. But there’s still a minor problem in both the Automation List and the DSP lane. Video should explain.

Neuro... No Neuro - Take a Step Outside of Yourself

March 26, 2022 - 14:59

New video (in rudimentary 3D!!!) for the Neuro… No Neuro moniker on the Audiobulb Records YouTube channel. Tons of fun to make this - learned about basic 3D design, and used MANU Game Maker to create the 3D world which the NNN TV Head walks through. Video processing through Apple Motion and various shaders, finalized in VN. Track created in Renoise, of course!

Best oscilloscope plugin, PsyScope Pro? (Windows only)

March 26, 2022 - 14:58

Just discovered this awesome multi-track oscilloscope plugin that I must share with you people. If you love diving into your waveforms you should take a look at this plugin, just insert it on the tracks you want to appear in the oscilloscope and work its magic.

There’s also a free version but I couldn’t get it set up properly in Renoise as I think you have to send sidechain to specific sidechain inputs of the plugin which I don’t think is possible in Renoise.

Do you know other oscilloscope plugins this good?

Wishes for next releases

March 26, 2022 - 07:45

I know, I know, it is a bit early Please don’t get me wrong, very happy with 3.4, a real improvement for macos users. Thanks for that!

Lately though there came up some new ideas for improving Renoise:

  • Sidechain having a color slider, just like in the convolver. This color slider of the convolver is very useful and the filters are just designed right IMO. So then you could attenuate your sidechain trigger signal. Middle should be 100% neutral, identical.
  • A sidechain receiver device, as replacement for the MRatio workaround
  • Note-off velocity support
  • Dry/wet for all compressors
  • Play/stop for Ableton link

And the usual suspects:

  • Parallel container dsp device, also capable of mid/side, left/right splitting, including a sidechain-in
  • Parallel VSTi instruments within the instrument section, so a system for passing note data thru the chains? Maybe there is an easier way, circumventing dsp lanes for midi…
  • Routing a single track to multiple VSTis (might be solved with above point)
  • 16 macros instead only 8
  • dsp-really-disabled-mode (no pdc), maybe a different color of the checkbox, inverted or whatever
  • Sidechain input for doofer
  • Making quantize more nice in the advanced panel or some extra stuff here. Nice would be some kind of live preview
  • macos: Support for appnap?, saving gpu load (read here)

LUA:

  • Better drawing API for primitives
  • Better mouse support, click on coordinate, on-click events with get-clicked-gui-element, dragging, etc. Maybe even dragging into GUI?
  • Check for undo operations and/or vst_parameter.is_bubbling true/false or similar (topic here)
  • Find_next_instrument_in_track() without changing the current track, moving the song position etc. Must be faast.
  • Support for luarocks or similar. E.g. using sqlite.
  • Real support for external dev tools, a.k.a. auto reloading on external save within the tool dir (e.g. using system’s directory watchers?). Maybe optional as a setting. Or even auto launching VSCode within the lua dir.

Please continue with your well thought ideas…
