A little review ? Please

Renoise Forum - March 10, 2025 - 14:10

Hello !

I’ve been meaning to post this question for a while now, but for various reasons I haven’t done it.

It’s about loading the Hypersonic 2 vsti.

Many of us have used it in previous versions of RENOISE, when it also worked in 32 bits. Now with version 3.5, but also since version 3.3, there is NO WAY to load this plugin,

I’ve tried using it with jbridge, but it doesn’t work either.

I know it’s asking a lot, but could the developer take a look to see how I could make it work ?

It’s a fantastic plugin, and should be well regarded.

In standalone form it works, but as a vsti, it doesn’t work…

I have to say that I have other 32-bit plugins that do work…which is strange then…
A real shame…

Thanks a lot!!!

A little review?

Linux: Bitwig Error with Redux

Renoise Forum - March 9, 2025 - 22:05

Hello
I am using the actual Manjaro (Arch) with XFCE.

Renoise recognizes Redux perfect.

But Bitwig says:
“com.bitwig.flt.library.metadata.reader.exception.CouldNotReadMetadataException: could not read metadata: Failed to load VST 2 plug-in /home/mobile/.vst/renoise_redux.so: /home/mobile/.vst/renoise_redux.so: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Invalid argument”

Does anyone has an Idea?

Thanks for your Help!

Best regards,

Beginner's Stumbling Block: Redux Product Name

Renoise Forum - March 9, 2025 - 18:54

Hi folks,

I’m a long-time Max and Ableton user, now loving Renoise and Redux!!! <3 But when I have a question and try to do a web search for an answer, the experience is frustrating. I think the product name is the problem.

“Renoise” is a great product name. It describes what the product does, and it’s unique so that web searches yield great results.

IMHO, “Redux” is a bad product name. It doesn’t really describe what the product is or does, and it’s almost impossible to get good web search results.

Search for Redux, and you get a JavaScript library of the same name. To narrow the search, I add the company name, i.e. Renoise. But then most of the search results are for Renoise, not Redux. Do you see my problem?

Product names are difficult, especially when looking for English “re-” words. Would Revisit (ReViSiT) yield better search results? How about Reslot? Or even Renoisy?

Sorry to complain about something that is probably impossible to fix. I do love this software. I’ll continue watching the videos and reading the documentation.

Keep up the good work!
Les

Formula Device Editor could return key to Renoise if it doesn't use it

Renoise Forum - March 9, 2025 - 14:32

while i’m editing in the Formula Editor, my shortcuts for muting-unmuting channels, or other shortcuts, don’t work, because the Editor in Formula Device “eats them up”.

this is a pretty hard showstopper for me cos i need to click away from the formula editor to be able to return back to using my shortcuts. what’s the solution?

Renoise to Ableton song conversion [I know it's blasphemy]

Renoise Forum - March 8, 2025 - 10:05

I’ve got a finished-ish Renoise track from ages ago, and I want to “finish the job” in Ableton.

Do you have any top tips for conversion? I believe these are my options…

  • Render entire song with tracks as separate stems (with FX)
  • Render entire song with tracks as separate stems (with no FX - use ‘Device Chain’ / Cut to quickly remove FX)
  • Export the MIDI using MIDI convert tool
  • Open the Song File as Zip and rebuild the samples in Ableton Sampler device(s)

Any other top tips?

Which keycommand would you prefer to use to close a lua dialog?

Renoise Forum - March 7, 2025 - 12:39

Hi, I’m wondering which keycommand or key you’d want to press, to universally/globally close a lua dialog?

i’ve seen ESC to be pretty popular. i’ve also made tab, backspace, space, enter a possibility. but are there others?

LSDJ-like note placement and transposing?

Renoise Forum - March 7, 2025 - 05:11

Is there any chance of ever seeing options to accomodate LSDJ-like note placement? I’m not asking to restructure the entire workflow of renoise, but it would be really nice to have the option to input notes and hold a button to transpose each up or down with the arrow keys with a note preview. Being able to hear each note as I step up or down is a great tool for inspiration, and I’d love to see some way of doing that without installing tools that require you to remap the keyboard in a way that makes everything else harder.

That eureka moment

Renoise Forum - March 6, 2025 - 20:39

…WHEN YOU REALIZE… that Renoise is not just the tracker / sampler / “DAW” / etc that you fell in love with…But she is also more like an instrument with her own voice. For years i ran VSTs inside of Renoise as well as made instruments inside of Renoise but lately i have realized that she can almost be like a modular synth in her/or his/ it’s…own right. Of course i have in the past made drums just with the built in waveforms and even bass sounds from time to time, but have after years of learning the ins and outs of synthesis it has blown me away what you can do as far as synthesis alone right inside of Renoise. OK it takes a lot more effort than firing up your favorite VST (AKA incoming MINDFUCK), but WOWZERS!!! I always admired guys that only used Renoise for nearly every sound…I GET IT NOW! Flipping beats and samples is all so much fun, but I encourage all to explore synthesis in Renoise. OK i shut it now…hehe Fecking Renoise fanboys …honestly.

How to create an autogapper?

Renoise Forum - March 5, 2025 - 23:23

hi, i’m wondering how to create an autogapper using an analog filter + LFO and sync it up to LPB & pattern length?
I had a legacy method of creating it, but the parameters have changed so i don’t know what that is anymore.
is there a doofer example somewhere maybe?

Arbitrary Fader Scaling Values

Renoise Forum - March 5, 2025 - 20:22

I would like to see arbitrary fader scaling values implemented at some point. It would make for more easily controlled complex (multi-stage) modulation envelopes.

For example, Crafting the pitch envelope of a kick that has a click stage and a body stage, or making a bass instrument that also has a percussive click stage and a slower body stage. i.e:

It can be done now using the current fader scaling options, but would be more flexible with the addition of an arbitrary scaling value as in the AHDSR attack, decay, and release stages.

I realize that arbitrary curves can be created with the envelope device, but I would ideally want macro control for the curve shape as well

T r a n s m I g r a t I o n

Renoise Forum - March 5, 2025 - 13:51

Hi, I wrapped an insanely ambitious (for me) project a while ago and meant to post it here, but I’m a space cadet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s an instrumental narrative piece in 8 parts that spans ambient, trip hop and some other genres I’m unsure how to properly classify. It was written entirely in Renoise, mixed and mastered in Reaper and includes some images to support the narrative as I see it in the download.

It’s free, as in free. I hope you like it:

High Level Pattern Arranger

Renoise Forum - March 5, 2025 - 13:46

Hi Forum Friends!

It’s been a minute

TL/DR: I would love a NLE pattern arranger that behaves something like the arranger in sunvox. The idea is that patterns of different lengths can be laid out on a timeline, concurrently, as one shots or loops depending on drawn length and potentially retimed with internally interpolated timescales.

If a tool like this exists in the plugin ecosystem that’s great, please let me know.

Some background:
I’m still using Renoise for composition. It’s simply the fastest way for me to get my ideas out, though my workflow has become far less sample based these days and relies a lot more heavily on using VST instruments.

The issue that I have is that my compositional goals are not loopy and haven’t been for a while. I’m more in a mind to construct looong slow spaces with transient, unique melodic passages going through them. I find the grid and looping-ostenato-centrism of Renoise to be a bit unwieldy with this. For a recent project I wound up working around this mostly by rendering stuff out and then arranging and mixing the results in reaper. It’s understood that there are workaround, but the truth is that having to jump between applications and pre-stage parts of a composition disrupts the very flow that makes Renoise and the tracker in general such a joy to work in.

I’m staring a new project and am currently looking into approaching some of what I’m trying to do with one-shot phrases (which are awesome) and arranging these in long patterns. This actually gets me quite close to the goal. Phrases can have their own internal timescales that are independent from the host pattern. The issue is that they are pretty opaque as objects in the pattern editor since they are abstracted away behind a root note instrument entry (ie: I have to remember that C-4 05 is an ascending glissando phrase at triple time).

I’ve considered other tools. Hockey-Trackey for Reaper was one considered option, as well as BitWig, but there is simply nothing that behaves as transparently for me to actually write melodic passages as Renoise. A meta-step upwards in the arranging model seems like a graceful and logical next-step for this amazing tool.

Thank you Renoise team for all that you do. It’s been an amazing 25 years together

But renoise.song().selected_device.external_editor_visible=true does not let you open it.

what’s the route for hitting “LFO on Track → Custom Shape → External Editor”, please?

LFO Device -> Custom Shape -> 1...6 Stored Envelope Presets accessible as shortcuts?

Renoise Forum - March 5, 2025 - 09:31

Hi, I saw @XTD briefly talk about this but it seems the question vanished.

so wouldn’t it be pretty neat if you had a way of calling specific Stored Envelope Presets in the Custom Shape?

Receiver Doesn't Match Actual Sent Audio

Receiver Doesn't Match Actual Sent Audio

When controlled by a Meta Device, the text in Receiver box doesn’t match to where the audio is actually being sent. In this example S01 is panned left, S02 is centered, S03 is panned right.

How would you scratch a sample?

Renoise Forum - March 2, 2025 - 23:37

I was just thinking about how you might scratch a sample the way you would scratch a record using Renoise? The only way I know to affect playback speed and direction is through effect commands Uxxx and Dxxx, but maybe if you attach the sample playhead value to an operand control so you could control it with midi? Is there any meta device or parameter that would give you tactile control if you assigned it to a midi controller?

The only other thing you would need to reproduce a basic turntable setup would be a crossfader that would let you link two tracks together and control their volume with one control. I’m imagining maybe a two-part meta device called crossfader track a and crossfader track B that could talk to each other and fade between three states: 100% A, 100% A + B, and 100% B.
