Renoise Forum - March 1, 2023 - 18:47

Hello,

This thread will be dedicated to all what is related to Renoise contests.
Post here all your questions / remarks / suggestions / ideas / links / whatever: it’s a brainstorming!
Here are a few examples below.

  • Who can vote? Contributors? Non-contributors? Both?
  • Who can win? Contributors who vote? All contributors?
  • Random winners? Winners by points?
  • VST allowed or All native? Free VST? Paying VST?
  • XRNS for extra points?
  • Speed compo? Mutant Breaks? Remix Contest? Other?
  • Do we need to make some noise on other social networks?
  • Do we need to find sponsorships to have bigger prices?
  • Duration for contest? Duration for voting? Once per year?

Your turn!

Runtime error 32 bit plugin

Renoise Forum - March 1, 2023 - 15:35

One of my favourite plugins is the old sq8l by butchy , sadly a 32 bit plugin .
Loading and playing the plugin ( obviously bridged ) works fine , but whenever a new renoise project is restarted or renoise is closed I get a runtimme error and accompanying crash

Note properties style tool for sample offset?

Renoise Forum - March 1, 2023 - 08:50

I’m looking for something similar to the note properties tool that gives you the encoders for easy adjustments.

Does anything like this already exist for the sample offset command? It would be great to be able to map it to a physical controller and quickly move through a sample.

MIDI controllers' receiver to follow focus

Renoise Forum - March 1, 2023 - 07:54

It’d be super if we could map controls for example to instrument macros so that whatever instrument is selected would receive the midi messages, enabling intuitive control of any instrument’s macros that the user is playing with just 8 knobs with the same controller preset. Currently the MIDI bindings are global and inflexible to use with instruments. Who uses MIDI channels nowadays anyway if not with outboard gear, limited to 16 per controller?

To give an example, Reaper has a possibility to bind MIDI controllers so that their routing follows what’s in focus on multiple levels of detail as set by the user. I’d go with particular overrides general - say you have global binding to macros for your eight controller knobs, but then focus AHDSR device where you have those mapped to all the parameters locally, and get hands-on control over those instantly. This way it would be logical and easy to build intuitive and extensive level of hands-on control thorough Renoise with MIDI controllers. The global bindings should come in two flavors, ones that can be overridden, and others that can’t - handy for top bar controls and navigation and whatnot,

If in the future we can use instrument modulators (and effects) with VSTi’s as well this would come especially handy, as Doofers aren’t by default on every instrument, and they do serve a slightly different purpose, not being bound to and saved with Renoise instrument, allowing us to save and recall sound design work easily in one go even with VST instruments.

Some strange MIDI input behavior regarding octaves

Renoise Forum - March 1, 2023 - 05:04

I haven’t gotten very deep into this yet, but Renoise seems to mishandle octave of its midi input.

One way to replicate and visualize:

  • Install loopMIDI
  • start a new song, so you know the table is clear, no transpositions or routings present
  • route the first instrument’s MIDI output to a loopMIDI virtual MIDI wire, no sound sources needed
  • route the second instrument to receive from that same virtual MIDI wire, no sound sources needed
  • make sure Renoise listens to your MIDI keyboard and play the first instrument - note how Renoise’s MIDI monitor and the virtual keyboard shows the note you’re playing and the note an octave down

You can further extend the chain to the third instrument, just set the second one to send to another loopMIDI port and the third one to receive from that same port. Now you’re playing three octaves at once. You may now load a sound source that follows MIDI note pitch to the third instrument, set its input to the second loopMIDI port and play three different octaves by changing the instrument you’re playing with the same MIDI keyboard key.

I’ve noticed before that I have to transpose an octave up to get the same octave than in another MIDI host. Somehow it’s as if Renoise would transpose all its MIDI note input an octave down. F.ex. Reaper plays a drum synth with my keyboard’s pads straight away, where in Renoise I need to set transpose to +12st. This breaks all MIDI interoperability regarding noteons between Renoise and other gear where noteon pitch is relevant.

Anyone noticed anything like this before?

New Tool(3.4): zoner

Renoise Forum - March 1, 2023 - 01:12

Implements a dialog to generate stacked keyzones for multiple samples distributed along the velocity range or octaves etc.

The dialog can be opened three ways

  • using the right-click menu inside the Keyzones editor view
  • pressing the Open zoner keybinding (if it’s configured)
  • from the Tools / zoner

see the source on gitlab

download from direct link (this zip includes all my other tools as well)

Renoise 3.4 does not load a VST that worked in 3.2, 3.3

Renoise Forum - February 28, 2023 - 03:17

I’ve been going through my collection of older songs, and loaded one from a few years ago in Renoise 3.4.2. Renoise complained it could not find the Ozone 9 Equalizer VST.

It listed other VSTs from Ozone 9, as well as Ozone 9 VST3 plugins (including the VST3 equalizer).

I opened the song in an earlier version of Renoise, and it loaded fine in 3.2.1 and in 3.3.

3.2 did not see any VST3 plugins, but at least with 3.3 I could load the song, with that VST, and also add the VST3 version, and then hand-copy the settings over.

But this seems like a real bug, that this VST no longer works in 3.4 while working fine in 3.3.

Autorender tool?

Renoise Forum - February 27, 2023 - 21:14

hello all,

maybe that tool exists (that would be awesome)
my 2010’s file is 2000 .xrns files
(a third of it are backups)

i would like a tool to render all the tracks that are in a windows file

it would need to open every tracks then to say fuck you to the windows that says that i don’t have the 10 years old version of this vsts render all track, opening the next track etc

i did it with a mouse record but as project opening/closing/render time is never the same that’s tricky

i guess i don’t have to explain how it would be convenient

thanks by advance

How to control BPM within a doofer

Renoise Forum - February 27, 2023 - 18:10

Hello, how to link BPM to a doofer? I want to use two instances of Renoise at the same time (for liveshows),
so it would be very practical to control the BPM within a doofer on the MIDI clock Master Renoise instance.
Any idea how I would achieve this?

Arch audio plays super slow

Renoise Forum - February 27, 2023 - 05:33

I’ve been trying to get Renoise/ALSA set up on Arch but whenever I play any audio through it (samples, tracks, etc.) the audio plays super slow. Almost like the sample rate is set super low.

I can play wav files using sox and they sound good.

I tried setting the CPU frequency scaling governor to “performance” and giving my user realtime privileges in /etc/security/limits.conf to no avail.

Could it just be that my laptop isn’t powerful enough to run Renoise (i5, 8gb ram)?

Keyboard stops working

Renoise Forum - February 27, 2023 - 00:24

Strange problem. I recently upgraded my system to win11. In 99% time it works perfect, but I have this problem twice: after I quit Renoise and open it again, computer keyboard not working at all. The same keyboard works in every other program in my system, but not in Renoise.

Has anyone had such a problem? After system restart - everything works perfect.
It’s very rare (so far twice and I have win11 from about 2 months) and I don’t really know why it happens.

Grab a plugin with track effects?

Renoise Forum - February 26, 2023 - 02:38

Hiya,

Just got back to playing with Renoise a bit - tried to render a plugin to samples, but I can’t come up with a way to include track effects to the render.

This is important, because I crafted a chain uses MIDI velocity to control some of the parameters dynamically in a drum synth that doesn’t have too much modulation options to begin with.

Can this be done?

Thanks!

Cableguys VST3 plugins not being detected

Renoise Forum - February 25, 2023 - 16:14

I’ve tried rescanning the only VST3 plugin folder that exists on my computer where I’ve installed Cableguys stuff, but I can’t get any of it to show up in Renoise. All the other plugins I own show up with no problem. Can anyone help me with this?

Tips for song arranging? Struggling with the arrangement window

Renoise Forum - February 24, 2023 - 16:00

Hello!

I look at the arrangement window and it’s the only part of Renoise I struggle to properly “see”. It’s the only thing I miss from a “typical” DAW. I find the “blocks” difficult to mentally parse, I can’t see the transition part or automation and how it all relates. Does anybody have any workflow tips or hacks (or wanna make a video on it, wink wink @slujr) that they’re happy to share?

Thanks

Sam

Can you see the path to a selected sample?

Renoise Forum - February 23, 2023 - 09:42

Hi guys,
is there any way to see the path to a selected sample in the instrument selector? Especially when I have renamed a sample I struggle to remember which folder I found it in, so it would be really nice get the file path by hovering the sample or right click → show file path.

I’m a complete beginner when in comes to trackers and have only been tinkering with Renoise for a couple of weeks and so far I’m loving it. I have to say that the amount of knowledge and willingness to help others on this forum is impressive, and I’ve learned a lot just by browsing.

My biggest fear is that with all the possibilities within Renoise, this can be a really deep rabbit hole from which it can be difficult to emerge from

Wicked Game - Cover

Always loved this song, not sure I can do it justice as I just don’t have the voice for it, but it was fun making it regardless
